In a heartbreaking incident early Monday morning, a three-year-old girl lost her life after a wall collapsed on her due to relentless rainfall in Karnataka’s Belagavi district.
The mishap occurred in Mahalingeshwar Colony of Gokak town, where little Keerthila Nagesh Poojari was sleeping alongside her elder sister. Without warning, the rear wall of their home gave in, burying the two children beneath the rubble. Keerthila died instantly, while her four-year-old sister sustained injuries.
The parents, who were resting in a different section of the house, escaped the tragedy unharmed. The injured child was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Local police from Gokak Town Station arrived at the location for investigation. Keerthila’s body has been moved to the government hospital mortuary in Gokak.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted intense to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in Belagavi and Dharwad districts. An orange alert remains in effect as precautionary measures continue.
In a related case just days ago in Bengaluru on May 19, a 35-year-old woman named Shashikala lost her life in a similar wall collapse. Authorities believe continuous overnight showers caused the structure to fail. Shashikala, who hailed from Shahapur in Yadgir district, was the wife of a daily wage worker and mother to two young children.
These incidents highlight the deadly risks posed by weakened structures during the monsoon season.
