Vijayapura: ‘Carry receipts if taking cash over Rs 50K’

Vijayapura: With the model code of conduct in place in the State for coming Assembly polls, people have been advised by the Election Commission to carry valid documents for any cash above Rs. 50,000.
The Deputy Commissioner Vijaymahantesh Danammanavar has said if the valid documents are not shown, then the amount would be seized during the checking by the polling officials or police.

Meanwhile the District Administration has geared up and made elaborate arrangements for holding free and fair assembtly elections to be held on May 10.

“For the transparent and impartial election, we have deployed teams of officials. Already 167 sector officials, 72 flying squad, 87 static surveillance teams, 24 video surveillance teams and eight each video viewing and accounting teams have been formed,” informed Danmmanavar.

He said that till date, the District has 18,78,303 voters, of them 9,59,132 male, 9,18,953 female while 218 are other voters.

For providing voting facilities to each voter, 2072 polling booths would be set up in the District, of which 334 have been identified as critical. For polling duty, while the District needs around 10,360 officials, the administration has identified some 12070 officials, Danammanavar said.

Some 3949 ballot units, 2796 control units and 2999 VVPATs would be used for polling. A total of 3041 Police officials of different ranks would be deployed for polling duty.

“As we will be receiving Central Armed Forces also, we will be deploying that essentially at the critical polling booth for smoother voting,” said Superintendent of Police H. D. Anand Kumar.

With regard to prevention of supply of materials illegally during the polls to woo the voters, the District Administration has set up 27 check posts, of them 11 are inter-state and 16 are inter-district checkposts. A total of Rs. 2.46 Crore worth cash, over 12,000 litres of liquor, over 73 kgs of contraband drugs, over Rs. 3 Crore worth materials have been seized. The total cash value of seized materials comes to over Rs. 7 Crore, the DC said.

The Election Commission has launched ‘Public App’ which could be downloaded in Smart TV phones to upload information or pictures about any violation of poll code. Common people could use the app to inform the officials about any illegality taking place during voting. The postal ballot facility has been provided to physically challenged persons and people about 80 years old who may be finding difficulty in going to polling booths to cast their vote, he said.
