Vijayapura: It has been almost a month since the election for City Corporation was held, but surprisingly, to date, the government has not announced the dates for the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Corporation.
The newly elected Corporators are also waiting for the date for taking oath as only after that, they would be able to discharge their duties officially as Corporator.
After the results were declared on October 31 last month, the newly elected corporators were busy with felicitation programmes, thanking their voters and holding meetings with the local leaders on development programmes.
Some of the Corporators who have influence over the government officials of MLAs tried to put pressure on them and got some civil projects approved, but that too was done only unofficially.
The Corporators are eagerly waiting for the government to announce the date for taking the oath and electing Mayor and Deputy Mayor to start work.
Meanwhile, the officials Regional Commissioner, by consulting the government, can announce the date and monitor the election process to choose the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
Interestingly, even before the City Corporation election, the government had announced reservations about the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Vijayapura City Corporation.
The post of mayor is reserved for backward classes (Women) and Deputy Mayor is for the general category.
Now, the speculations are rife that the local leaders who are part of the ruling government are trying to get this reservation changed to ensure that their staunch followers get the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
“ We still have no idea why the government is delaying in announcing the date for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. We are still waiting for the date. We are feeling that the BJP leaders are deliberately delaying it”, said Nishat Nadaf, the newly elected Corporator.
