Belagavi: A disturbing incident unfolded in Belagavi, Karnataka, where a woman was allegedly assaulted, paraded naked, and tied to an electric pole by relatives of a girl after her son eloped with the girl. The incident occurred in the village of New Vantamuri, leading to the arrest of seven individuals.

Background of the Incident

The 24-year-old man, identified as Ashok, and the 18-year-old girl, Priyanka, were reportedly in love and belonged to the same community in the village. In the early hours of Monday, they decided to elope, leaving the village at around 12:30 am. Upon learning about their elopement, the girl’s family members, along with relatives, allegedly attacked Ashok’s house, causing damage.

Assault on Mother and Inhuman Treatment

During the attack, the woman, identified as Ashok’s mother, was reportedly dragged away from the house. She was subjected to physical assault, forced to parade naked, and ultimately tied to an electric pole. The local police received information about the incident at 4 am and promptly intervened.

Police Response and Arrests

The police, including the Police Sub Inspector and other senior officials, reached the village and arrested seven individuals involved in the assault. The woman was rescued, and a case has been registered at the Kakati police station. Additional police forces have been deployed to prevent any potential escalation of the situation.

Political Response

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed strong condemnation of the incident, terming it “extremely inhuman.” He assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the offence. In a post on X, Siddaramaiah conveyed his commitment to ensuring justice for the aggrieved family, emphasizing that such heinous acts would not be tolerated.

Home Minister G Parameshwara, who visited the area, echoed the Chief Minister’s sentiments, describing the incident as shameful and inhuman. He mentioned that 10-15 members of the girl’s family were involved in the attack on the youth’s mother. The rescued woman was taken to the hospital for treatment. Parameshwara assured that efforts were underway to locate the eloped couple and that the police were taking appropriate legal action against the perpetrators.

The incident highlights the need for swift and decisive action against acts of violence and moral policing within communities. The authorities are actively investigating the matter to ensure justice for the victims and hold the offenders accountable for their actions.
