Bengaluru : As promised, Bengalureans should expect to see more adaptive signals soon, but in as little as three months, 50 more may become a reality. Under the Bengaluru City Road Safety and Traffic Management Project, the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) has released a tender for the provision, installation, commissioning, and upkeep of automated traffic signals at 51 new junctions in Bengaluru city. The Bengaluru City Traffic Police will receive the signals at a cost of Rs 7,90,09,740.
Fifty locations have planned adaptive signals. Thirteen of the fifty locations are planned in the Traffic East division, fourteen in the West division, eleven in the North division, and thirteen in the South division.

Apart from the automation feature, the adaptive signals are capable of assigning the signal time based on the volume of traffic flow. The signal can be controlled through the central traffic control centre as an individual junction or as part of a group of traffic junctions along a corridor or a region. The system would allow for the junction to be easily configured to be part of any corridor or group definition and could be changed easily through the central command controller.

The controller shall be capable of communicating with the ATCS system server through Ethernet on a managed leased line network or any other appropriate stable communication network. The controller should be enabled to optimise the traffic light timing using crowdsource data, apart from the vehicle detector camera.

Utilizing a remote device, the system would additionally enable manual traffic signal control. For emergency vehicles equipped with GPS units, the traffic signal system would also be able to grant priority. Making green spaces for ambulances to travel through would be a special use for the system.

Signals have been proposed at several junctions, including the War Memorial Junction, Chandrika Junction, Kalyan Nagar Junction, Hennur Junction, Nice Road Junction, A Krishnappa Junction, Channasandra Junction, Seegehalli Junction, Kodathi Junction, Siddappa Reddy Junction, New Light Junction, and more, according to the tender.

In 2022, the Bengaluru Traffic Police suggested installing adaptive signals at fifty sites.
