Bengaluru: Conservancy workers are supposed to collect garbage from the doorsteps of the residents in Bengaluru as per the guidelines of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) but an incident of conservancy workers dumping garbage in the compound of a resident took place at Indiranagar in Bengaluru.

The unfortunate and shocking incident took place at 1st Stage of Indiranagar. Sneha Nandihal, president of BM Kaval Indinaragar 1st Stage Residents’ Welfare Association has recalled how garbage mafia wanted to take revenge on her for trying to implement segregation of waste in the area.

“My parents built their house way back in 1964. I have seen Indiranagar transform itself from being a purely residential area to a commercial area. When I saw things going from bad to worse I decided to work for a better Indiranagar. Garbage everywhere, commercial establishments in every nook and corner. I took it up and received tremendous support from various quarters be it residents, acvists, officials, even ministers, etc. I formed a team and we achieved quite a lot. Dry waste system was put in place. Black spots were cleared. Footpaths were cleared, commercial establishments sitting illegally in residential area were shut down. Garbage was always a problem with the BBMP sweepers collecting mixed waste from commercial establishments. They make their money and mix into the residential waste which one, take up the space meant for residences in the compactor and since it is mixed cannot be recycled. So under the guidance of Sarfaraz Khan, and as per solid waste management guidelines started moving all bulk generators to a BBMP empanelled vendor chosen by the Corporator. Every time I attempted to streamline the system the Corporator and garbage mafia ensure that BBMO did not support us,’’ Sneha Nandihal posted on her facebook.

Meanwhile, reacting to the incident, Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner, Solid Waste Management, BBMP, said that the palike was checking if there was a connection between Nandihal’s campaign to get commercial properties to hand over waste to empanelled vendors and the incident.
