Bengaluru: Even though the BBMP launched the waste segregation at source initiative three years ago, it failed to convince the city residents. According to the BBMP authorities, the waste segregation at source came down to 45% from 60% recorded during the launch of the initiative.
According to D Randeep, special commissioner (Solid waste management), the waste segregation at source has come down to 45% in the last few days, which is alarming.
However, some claim that the waste segragatioon at source has dwindled to 30. “We are aware of this negative trend. We will work towards creating awareness,” said D Randeep.
According to the sources, this year the BBMP has floated tenders only for the waste wet. “This means, the Poura Karmikas will not collect the dry waste. Waste segregation is compulsory,” said an officer from the BBMP.
“It is sad that most of the residents are still declining to adopt the new initiatives. Waste segregation at source is the only solution for the garbage problem of the city,” he added.
