Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) has commenced the weeding of Bellandur Lake in Bengaluru east suburb as per the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directive.
“We have commenced weeding of Bellandur Lake today. It will take us four to five months to complete with work since we have to cover entire lake that spreads over 900 acres,’’ P N Nayak, Engineer Member, BDA told reporters here.
The BDA, the custodian of Bellandur Lake, has assigned a private contractor for weeding of Bellandur Lake on Saturday. The work has commenced on Monday afternoon. “We have assigned a private contractor to clean the lake at an estimated cost of Rs 3.35 crore,’’ Nayak said.
The National Green Tribunal has given Karnataka government one month to restore the lake. The NGT in its interim order dated April 19, 2017 has directed Karnataka state government agencies that are connected with Bellandur Lake to submit an action plan within two weeks.
The government agencies such as BDA, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority (KLCDA), Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and Urban Development Department met on Saturday to discuss about the NGT interim order.
“We are inspecting the lake bund,’’ G Vidyasagar, Chief Executive Officer, KLCDA, said.
