Kempegowda International Airport’s award-winning Terminal 2 continues to earn praise from travellers around the world, with a Bengaluru-based industrialist and diplomat recently describing it as one of the most memorable airports he has ever visited.
Akkshye Tulsyan, an industrialist, philanthropist and diplomat from Bengaluru, shared his admiration for the airport on social media while travelling to Japan. Having visited more than 30 countries, Tulsyan said Bengaluru’s airport was among the few places that made him stop and appreciate its surroundings.
“An airport with a soul”
In his post, Tulsyan said what makes Bengaluru airport unique is its ability to feel welcoming and alive rather than resembling a typical transport hub.
According to him, Terminal 2 avoids the sterile atmosphere commonly associated with large airports and instead creates an environment that encourages travellers to slow down and enjoy the space.
He described the experience as walking into a lush park rather than an airport terminal, noting that the greenery and thoughtful design create a sense of calm and relaxation.
Tulsyan added that the airport’s ambience helps travellers leave behind stress and enjoy the journey itself, making it a destination in its own right.
Inspired by Bengaluru’s Garden City identity
Terminal 2 was designed around Bengaluru’s long-standing reputation as the “Garden City of India”, with nature integrated into nearly every aspect of the structure.
According to architectural reports, the terminal houses more than 6 lakh live plants and around 1,200 species of trees and vegetation. Hanging gardens, green walls and landscaped pathways create the impression of a large botanical garden.
Nearly 1.5 lakh plants are suspended from the ceiling through specially designed planters, while an additional 4.5 lakh plants are spread across extensive green installations throughout the terminal.
Award-winning design
Beyond its greenery, the terminal features over 923 kilometres of fire-resistant bamboo cladding, giving the interiors a warm and natural appearance.
The space is also home to 60 artworks created by 43 artists from Karnataka and across India, celebrating culture, biodiversity and local craftsmanship.
Terminal 2 has received international recognition, including a place on UNESCO’s list of the World’s Most Beautiful Airports and the World Special Prize for Interior 2023.
Its combination of sustainability, art and nature has transformed the travel experience, making Bengaluru airport one of the city’s most admired landmarks.
