In response to the severe water crisis gripping Bengaluru, authorities have made the decision to provide treated water to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the city for the upcoming IPL 2024 cricket matches. The decision comes amidst concerns over water scarcity and aims to alleviate pressure on existing water resources.
Decision by Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB)
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), acting upon a request from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) management board, has agreed to supply treated water to the stadium. Approximately 75,000 litres of treated water will be required daily during the matches.
Utilization of Treated Water
To fulfill the water requirement of the stadium, treated water will be sourced from the Cubbon Park wastewater treatment plant. BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasad Manohar has affirmed the board’s commitment to providing treated water, emphasizing its role in preventing the misuse of groundwater and Cauvery river water while promoting the efficient utilization of treated water resources.
Addressing Bengaluru’s Water Crisis
The decision to supply treated water to the stadium underscores the severity of the water crisis in Bengaluru. Factors such as reduced rainfall, depleting groundwater levels, and strained recharge options have contributed to the acute shortage of water in the city.
Current Water Situation
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently highlighted the pressing water shortage in Bengaluru, revealing that the city faces a deficit of 500 million litres of water per day (MLD) against a demand of 2,600 MLDs. Additionally, out of 14,000 borewells in Bengaluru, 6,900 have dried up.
Measures to Conserve Water
In light of the water crisis, the Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board has implemented strict measures, including a ban on the use of drinking water for non-essential activities such as car washing, gardening, construction, and maintenance in Bengaluru. These measures are aimed at conserving water and ensuring its equitable distribution during this challenging period
