Bengaluru Cop’s Tragic Suicide Sparks Debate on Harassment Allegations

In a heartbreaking incident, Bengaluru police head constable Thippanna, 34, died by suicide on Friday night, allegedly due to mental harassment by his wife and father-in-law. Thippanna, stationed at Hulimavu Traffic Police Station, ended his life on railway tracks near Carmelaram, leaving a detailed suicide note blaming his wife and father-in-law, Yamunappa, for the extreme step.

Thippanna, a native of Handiganuru village in Vijayapura district, claimed in his note that he faced life threats from Yamunappa, who allegedly encouraged him to die, stating his daughter would be better off without him. According to the note, a heated call on December 12 further deepened his anguish, driving him to take the tragic step. Byappanahalli Railway Police have registered a case and begun investigations.

The incident follows another shocking suicide earlier in the week by Bengaluru-based engineer Atul Subhash. Atul left behind a video and a 24-page note alleging harassment by his wife and her family, claiming they demanded ₹3 crore for a divorce settlement. His death triggered a wave of online outrage, with hashtags like #MenToo and #JusticeForAtulSubhash trending on social media.

These back-to-back tragedies have reignited discussions about the mental health of men and the societal pressures they face. Activists and netizens are calling for balanced laws and mechanisms to address harassment, irrespective of gender.
