Bengaluru’s traffic management system has received a significant boost, with over 8,700 surveillance cameras installed across the city to monitor violations and improve enforcement.

Extensive camera network across city roads

According to data shared by authorities, the surveillance network includes both CCTV cameras and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems deployed at key junctions and arterial roads.

Home Minister G. Parameshwara informed that 7,500 CCTV cameras have been installed, of which 7,477 are currently operational, while 23 remain non-functional.

In addition, 1,254 ANPR cameras have been set up, with 1,233 functioning and 21 temporarily out of service.

Civic works affecting some camera operations

Officials attributed the small number of non-operational cameras to ongoing infrastructure projects. Activities such as road widening, utility works, and other civic developments have temporarily disrupted certain installations.

Authorities assured that these cameras will be restored once the works are completed.

Key role in traffic violation detection

The surveillance system plays a crucial role in identifying traffic violations such as signal jumping, overspeeding, and lane indiscipline.

ANPR cameras, in particular, enable automatic detection of vehicle registration numbers, allowing authorities to issue fines efficiently without manual intervention.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Bengaluru Traffic Police to improve compliance and road discipline amid rising vehicle numbers.

Facility for citizens to contest fines

Officials highlighted that mechanisms have been put in place for citizens to raise objections in case of incorrect or duplicate fines.

Complaints can be submitted at traffic police headquarters or through the Karnataka State Police App, which enables users to file grievances online.

All fines collected are credited to designated government accounts under traffic violation categories.

Strengthening urban mobility and compliance

With thousands of cameras already operational and more expected to be added, authorities believe the surveillance network will play a vital role in managing Bengaluru’s growing traffic challenges.

The move reflects a shift towards technology-driven enforcement aimed at improving road safety, reducing violations, and ensuring smoother traffic flow across the city.
