Bengaluru : Bengaluru is gearing up for a temporary liquor ban set to commence today, impacting all regions of the state capital except those under police commissioner jurisdiction. The ban, scheduled from today at 5 pm until 6 am on February 17, is in response to the upcoming by-election for a vacant seat in the Karnataka Legislative Council.
Former MLC Puttanna’s resignation before last year’s assembly election triggered this by-election, prompting authorities to implement the ban to maintain order during the voting process, which is slated for Friday. While coinciding with Valentine’s Day, the ban is primarily motivated by electoral concerns rather than the holiday itself.
The ban’s timing has sparked concerns among business owners, particularly those in the hospitality sector. Pubs and bars anticipate significant financial losses, estimated at around ₹500 crore, as they miss out on Valentine’s Day festivities and potential revenue. The Bengaluru City District Liquor Traders Association has voiced opposition, citing projected losses for thousands of establishments and the state’s excise duty revenue.
Despite these concerns, the ban remains in effect as authorities aim to ensure a smooth electoral process without untoward incidents. With the election scheduled for Friday and vote counting set for February 20, residents and businesses alike brace for the temporary prohibition.
