The Bengaluru Department of School Education has kicked off an ambitious 21-day ‘Reading Campaign’ aimed at enhancing reading skills among students in classes 1 to 7. The campaign, which will unfold in two phases, began on Tuesday and will run through September 18.
The initiative started with a vibrant read-a-thon, involving students, teachers, and block-level officials. From 11 am to 11:30 am, participants engaged in a communal reading session of their favorite books. This event underscores the campaign’s goal of leveraging the power of reading to improve students’ comprehension and knowledge base.
The department emphasizes that while the Reading Campaign is crucial, it must not interfere with regular classroom activities. According to a circular, reading activities should be incorporated into morning assembly time, the first class of the day, or designated library hours, ensuring they do not disrupt standard teaching schedules.
During the campaign, students will be given age-appropriate storybooks. In the absence of physical books, teachers can use PDF materials provided by the department. Teachers are also encouraged to document the campaign’s progress with photographs and share them on local WhatsApp groups involving officials, parents, and School Development and Monitoring Committees.
This initiative highlights the department’s commitment to fostering a love of reading while maintaining educational balance in schools.
