Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited has directed all waste generators in the city to compulsorily segregate garbage into four separate categories under the new Solid Waste Management Rules–2026.

The announcement was made during a public workshop at Town Hall attended by citizens, Resident Welfare Associations, NGOs, hotel groups and BSWML staff.

Four bins now compulsory

Under the revised system, households, apartments, businesses and institutions must sort waste into the following categories:

  • Wet waste: biodegradable items such as food scraps
  • Dry waste: recyclable materials such as paper, plastic and metal
  • Sanitary waste: personal hygiene waste
  • Special care waste: items requiring careful handling during disposal

Officials said the move aims to improve recycling, scientific disposal and cleaner neighbourhoods.

Focus on apartments and bulk generators

Karigowda said meetings will be held with Resident Welfare Associations across five city corporations to guide large apartment complexes on managing higher waste volumes.

Authorities also plan to introduce an Extended Bulk Waste Generator Responsibility framework to increase accountability among major waste producers.

New online portal soon

BSWML announced that a centralised digital portal will be launched shortly to bring greater transparency and sharper monitoring of daily waste operations.

The system is expected to maintain records of waste infrastructure, collection systems and disposal processes across the city.

Citizens urged to cooperate

Ramamani explained the responsibilities of residents, processing units, bulk generators and government departments during the workshop.

Officials said public participation remains essential for the success of the new rules and for building a cleaner Bengaluru.
