BENGALURU: In a shocking case of domestic violence, a 29-year-old man allegedly murdered his 27-year-old wife by stabbing her multiple times before taking his own life in their rented house on Ullal Main Road on Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as Manju P, a nurse working in Bengaluru, and her husband Dharmaseelan Ramesh, a mason who had recently returned from Dubai. Police said the crime was discovered late on Sunday night after Manju’s father, Periyaswamy, returned home to find the house locked from inside.
Couple’s background
According to police, Manju hailed from Kallakurchi district in Tamil Nadu, while Dharmaseelan was from Viluppuram. The couple got married in September 2022 and did not have children.
After marriage, they lived together in Tamil Nadu for a year. Later, Dharmaseelan moved to Dubai for work, while Manju relocated to Bengaluru with her parents. For the past one-and-a-half years, she had been living with her father in a rented apartment on Ullal Main Road. Her mother also resided with them.
Dharmaseelan returned to India a month ago and stayed briefly with Manju in Tamil Nadu before she returned to Bengaluru for her job. On Thursday, he called his father-in-law and informed him that he would be shifting to Bengaluru permanently to live with his wife.
Gruesome discovery
On Sunday evening, Periyaswamy returned from Tumakuru, where he had been working, and went home with his nephew. When no one responded to their knocks, they used a spare key provided by the building owner to enter.
Inside, they were horrified to find Manju lying in a pool of blood on the bed and Dharmaseelan hanging beside her. Police were alerted immediately.
Brutal attack
A senior police officer said Manju had suffered around 45 stab injuries all over her body, particularly on her neck and throat. “Dharmaseelan slit her throat and stabbed her multiple times. We suspect he continued stabbing even after her death,” the officer said.
Investigators believe the crime was committed on Sunday afternoon. Based on preliminary inquiries, Manju’s family alleged that Dharmaseelan had grown suspicious of her interactions with colleagues at the hospital where she worked.
Probe underway
Police have registered a case and begun an investigation into the murder-suicide. Forensic experts inspected the crime scene, and the bodies were shifted for post-mortem examination.
Authorities said the case highlights yet another tragic instance of domestic discord turning violent. “This is a grim reminder of how suspicion and lack of communication can escalate into irreversible tragedies,” an officer added.
Conclusion
The deaths of Manju and Dharmaseelan have sent shockwaves across the locality, with neighbours recalling the young nurse as quiet and dedicated. Police have assured a thorough investigation to piece together the sequence of events and underlying causes that led to the gruesome crime.
