In a poignant demonstration of solidarity, the Karnataka State Branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) organized a candlelight march on Tuesday in response to the recent brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata.
The march saw the participation of 100 to 120 medicos from Bangalore Medical College and Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, who gathered to mourn the tragic incident and advocate for enhanced security measures for medical professionals.
Dr. Karunakara B P, Secretary of IMA, emphasized the urgent need for government action to protect doctors. He highlighted the ongoing discussions among IMA office-bearers to meet with the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, to address these concerns. Dr. Karunakara also referenced the previous year’s tragic killing of Dr. Vandana Das in Kerala, underscoring the critical issue of inadequate security at medical institutions across the country.
The march reflects growing concerns within the medical community about safety and security, and the IMA’s commitment to pushing for necessary reforms to safeguard healthcare professionals.
