Bengaluru needs more STPs, says Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday stressed the need for treatment of sewage water keeping in view the growing needs of burgeoning city of Bengaluru.

Speaking after inaugurating the newly built Sewerage Water Plan Unit at Kothanur, the chief minister said the city’s requirement was 1800 MLD of which 1040 was being wasted. “Of this 721 MLD water was being treated already. The government was making efforts to process remaining waste water in a phased manner. While 60 MLD was being treated at Challaghata already, another 65 MLD capacity plant was today opened,’’ he said.

The chief minister detailed out various developmental activities launched by his government towards improving living conditions of the city ever since he took over the reins of administration over four years ago. He said the government had released Rs 7300 crore for various projects such as garbage clearance,

sewage water treatment plants, proper drainage system and development roads. It had also spent Rs 5000 crore to provide 10000 litres water to people living in 110 villages.

He said the city, with a population of over 1.10 crore, had grown beyond limits and there was a need to give constant attention to meet the basic needs of people. “Keeping this in view the government had already embarked on implementing the second phase of the ‘Namma Metro’ Rail service by investing Rs 26750 crores. Besides, over 3000 buses were being newly purchased and added on to the already existing fleet of busses for city service,” he explained.

Bangalore Development Minister K J George, who inaugurated newly built sewage treatment plants at Nagasandra and Chikkabanavara earlier in the day, said the government is making all out efforts to keep the city clean besides providing required infrastructural facilities to the people.

Embassy of Japan representative Shri Kenji Iramatsu, KR Puram MLA B Basavaraju, Yeshwantpur MLA i S T Somasekhar, Mayor Smt G Padmavathi, Deputy Mayor Ananda and others were present.

While the construction of STP at Kothanur with 40 MLD capacity cost Rs 132 crore, the Nagasandra plant with a capacity of 20 MLD cost Rs 66.76 crore. The construction cost of five MLD capacity plant built at Chikkabanavara is Rs 46.49 crore.

The three plants, with Japanese financial assistance, have been installed by maintaining highest quality standards in design.
