Bengaluru: Dry chillies are commonly used for cooking and in sambar powder. However, various varieties of dry chillies developed at Indian Institute of Horticulture Research (IIHR) are not only used to prepare chilli powder, chilli flakes and chilli oil but also in cosmetics such as shampoo, and serums.
Different varieties of chillies are grown on 2 lakh acres of land in the State. Raichur, Ballari and Byadgi have a large number of these crops. Here in green chillies for vegetables and red chillies for spices are grown.
However, Indian Institute of Horticulture Research (IIHR) Scientists have developed hybrid seeds by observing that the yield was declining due to ash disease, and root disease, which is now used while preparing cosmetics.
