Bengaluru’s first double-decker flyover at the busy Central Silk Board Junction may have reduced congestion at the junction itself, but traffic pressure has now shifted to nearby roads, prompting fresh infrastructure plans in South Bengaluru.
According to reports, the Bengaluru South City Corporation (BSCC) has floated tenders to appoint consultants for feasibility studies and preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) for two new grade-separated interchanges.
New bottlenecks emerge after Silk Board relief
Officials said traffic congestion has intensified on stretches surrounding the Silk Board corridor after the opening of the double-decker flyover.
The proposed projects are expected to focus on easing vehicle movement at key intersections in South Bengaluru where traffic volume has sharply increased.
One of the planned projects includes a flyover-cum-underpass near the Raghavendra Swamy Mutt Junction.
Authorities are studying additional high-traffic junctions where long queues and slow-moving traffic have become common during peak hours.
Consultants to prepare feasibility reports
The tenders invite consultants to examine traffic patterns, road design possibilities, technical feasibility, and estimated project costs before final plans are approved.
Officials believe the new infrastructure projects could help redistribute traffic flow and improve connectivity in rapidly developing parts of South Bengaluru.
The move comes amid increasing concern over Bengaluru’s worsening traffic congestion despite multiple flyover, metro, and road expansion projects across the city.
Bengaluru continues search for long-term traffic solutions
Traffic experts have repeatedly pointed out that congestion often shifts to adjoining roads after isolated infrastructure upgrades unless larger mobility networks are improved simultaneously.
The city has been exploring multiple measures including metro expansion, suburban rail, bus priority systems, signal-free corridors, and grade separators to manage growing commuter pressure.
The double-decker flyover at Silk Board was originally designed to decongest one of Bengaluru’s busiest traffic intersections connecting major IT corridors and arterial roads.
