Bengaluru — The Karnataka government has announced a major investment of Rs 1,100 crore in Bengaluru’s road infrastructure, aimed at repairing damaged roads and constructing new ones. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed the allocation on Sunday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the funds would be distributed across all assembly constituencies to ensure citywide improvement.
Fund allocation details
Under the plan:
- 14 assembly constituencies will receive Rs 50 crore each.
- Remaining constituencies will receive Rs 25 crore each.
The funds are earmarked for both road repair projects and construction of new roads, with the overarching goal of creating smooth, pothole-free commutes for Bengaluru residents. Shivakumar emphasised the government’s commitment to addressing chronic issues in the city’s road network and improving overall traffic safety.
Persistent problems on Bengaluru roads
Despite ongoing repair efforts, many areas of Bengaluru continue to struggle with hazardous road conditions. A survey by the Times of India across five stretches revealed that deep craters were either cordoned off with temporary barricades or filled with uneven cement, which often washes away during rain.
Commuters expressed frustration over what they described as “death traps” on the roads.
In Judicial Layout, a south Bengaluru neighbourhood home to judges, IAS officers, and senior government officials, residents highlighted the severity of the problem. Children from the area reportedly wrote poems about the crumbling roads and sent them to the Prime Minister’s Office, urging authorities to improve daily commuting conditions.
Located near Thalaghattapura on Kanakapura Road, Judicial Layout falls under the Bengaluru South city corporation limits. Residents say frequent digging, dust, and craters have made everyday travel increasingly hazardous.
Government focus and next steps
With the Rs 1,100 crore allocation, the government intends to systematically repair potholes, resurface damaged stretches, and construct new roads to enhance connectivity across Bengaluru. Officials have indicated that each constituency will closely monitor the utilisation of funds to ensure timely completion of projects.
Conclusion
The sizeable allocation marks a significant step toward improving Bengaluru’s infrastructure and addressing long-standing road safety issues. While residents remain hopeful, effective implementation and regular monitoring will be crucial to transforming the city’s roads from “death traps” into smooth, safe, and reliable thoroughfares.
