Bengaluru’s Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) is set to implement stricter measures for disconnections of power supply for consumers who fail to pay their electricity bills within 30 days of the due date, effective September 1. This action is in accordance with the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) guidelines, which mandate disconnections if bills or additional security deposits are not settled within the specified timeframe.
Previously, BESCOM provided defaulters with extended grace periods before initiating disconnections. However, the company is now tightening its enforcement policies. According to a statement from BESCOM, “All domestic and commercial consumers, as well as those in apartments and with temporary electricity connections, must ensure their bills are paid within 30 days. Non-compliance will result in disconnection on the day of meter reading, which occurs within the first 15 days of each month.”
Under the new policy, BESCOM’s power men (linemen) will accompany meter readers during their initial visit, rather than visiting separately after the meter reading cycle. This change means that immediate disconnections will occur for consumers with overdue bills.
BESCOM allows a 15-day period for bill payments without interest, followed by an additional 15-day grace period with interest after the due date. Any unpaid bill exceeding ₹100 will be treated as a default, leading to disconnection.
For those who pay their bills online and have not seen the update in BESCOM’s system, it is advised to present their payment receipt to BESCOM staff to avoid disconnection.
This stricter policy aims to promote timely payments and ensure adherence to regulatory guidelines.
