BMTC Expands QR Code System, Aims for Improved Commuter Experience
Bengaluru’s BMTC is enhancing its QR code payment system, making it more accessible and convenient for passengers. Initially available only on AC buses, the system was extended to the majority of the fleet following last month’s fare hike. This move was aimed at alleviating difficulties for passengers and conductors who faced challenges with finding the right change or denominations.
As of now, about 6,000 of BMTC’s 6,265 buses are equipped with QR code payment options, with the codes displayed on windows. While passengers have welcomed the change, many have noted that the placement of the QR codes—often at the middle or rear of the bus—makes them hard to find. During peak hours, crowded buses make it difficult for passengers to access the codes, causing inconvenience as they have to return to the conductor to show proof of payment.
In response, BMTC is planning to introduce a dynamic QR code system by March. The new system will integrate QR codes into the electronic ticketing machines with conductors. This will allow passengers to scan the code directly from the machines, with tickets being printed instantly. Currently, the machines are being tested.
Chandra Shekar R, president of the Karnataka State Road Transport Employees League, acknowledged the challenges during peak hours, especially in crowded buses. He mentioned that suggestions from conductors would be presented to the government soon to improve the system.
In addition, BMTC has hit a major milestone by generating Rs 1 crore in daily revenue through UPI-based ticketing. The initiative has seen a sharp increase in usage, with UPI payments doubling in just under a month.
