Bengaluru: The city witnessed drama during the weekend when a woman who was stopped for driving drunk in Koramanagla assaulted a traffic cop and tried to flee the scene.

The accused who is a resident of Koramangala is said to have been riding her two wheeler in an inebriated state. Wilson Garden traffic police asked her to stop to take an alcometer test.

The lady who was in a visibly drunken state, refused to move and kept hurling abuses at the officers on duty. Having no choice, the police officers then took her keys away, trying to convince her to take the drunken driving test but to no avail.

A constable videographing the incident said Dimple started to attack him too. She allegedly broke his mobile phone and damaged a walkie-talkie.

When finally the lady tested on the alcometer, the reading showed 160 mg/100ml which was beyond the permissible limits. To add to the drama, when the police were taking her details, she is said to have snatched her keys from the police and started to ride away in the same drunken state.

The entire episode is said to have gone on for almost two hours.

Deputy commissioner of police (traffic-east) CK Baba said, “We have been asking people to understand that cops stop them for their own safety. If they are drunk, action will be taken according to the law. A case will be registered and they will be produced in court. A fine will be imposed. If they manhandle or argue with the police, a criminal case will be registered and they will have to spend at least two weeks in jail. So it is better they don’t talk irresponsibly.”

He added that he would talk to his colleagues to ensure they respond quicker. Apart from a criminal case for assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty, the accused has been booked by traffic police for drunken driving, not having licence, reckless driving and not carrying vehicle documents.

Interestingly, the additional commissioner of Police (traffic) MA Saleem said that this year itself, there have been 75 cases of verbal or physical assault on a police officer recorded.
