CEO of Janashri TV channel held for extortion in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Bengaluru police have arrested two employees of TV channel on the charges of extortion at Koramangala in Bengaluru south-east suburb on Friday night.“We have arrested Lakshmiprasad Vajapai, 42, Chief Executive Officer, and Mithun, an employee, of Janashri TV channel while accepting money from a businessman,’’Ajay R M, Police Inspector, Koramangala Police Station, said.

The police have raided the premises of Janashri TV channel on Friday night and nabbed the duo when the complainant handing over the first installment of the ransom demanded by Lakshmiprasad Vajapai.

“Lakshmiprasad Vajapai threatened a businessman to telecast derogatory episode if he doesn’t give him Rs 10 crore. A brief episode was telecast to threaten the businessman. We will produce Vajapai and Mithun before the court today,’’ the police inspector said.

Koramangala police have registered a case against the accused under Sections 384 (extortion), 385 (putting a person in fear of injury) 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

One more case is registered against Lakshmiprasad Vajapai and his associates at Commercial Street Police Station in Bengaluru east suburb under Sections 384, 385, 506, 34 of IPC for extortion of Rs 10 crore and jewellery worty Rs 30 lakh from one more businessman.

In this case, Vajapai is alleged to have received the ransom of Rs 10 crore through bank transaction in the name of various entities. The total demand was Rs 15 crore.

Another first information report (FIR) is pending against Vajapai and others at Mahalakshmipuram police station under Section 507, 34, 385 of IPC. The case was registered on March 23.
