BENGALURU: The Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate, Jagadeesha G, on Friday began collecting testimonies from police officials as part of the inquiry into the tragic stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, which claimed 11 lives.
Among those who provided their statements were Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) Lokesh B Jagalasar (South Division) and Saidulu Adavath (North Division). DCP Sarah Fathima (Southeast Division) was unable to appear due to official responsibilities related to the passing of retired IGP MV Murthy in HSR Layout. She is scheduled to record her statement on Monday.
According to insiders, the administration had issued summons to 44 officers, including some who have been suspended. These officials were part of the special security deployment during the RCB IPL victory celebrations at the stadium.
Police personnel, in their accounts, reportedly stated that the stampede was triggered when stadium gates were unexpectedly opened, leading to an overwhelming crowd surge far beyond anticipated numbers.
More officers are expected to be examined early next week, and the preliminary findings from the investigation are likely to be compiled and submitted within seven days.
This inquiry aims to pinpoint lapses in crowd management and assign accountability for the incident that shocked the city during what was meant to be a celebratory event.
