Citizens question BDA’s authority to prepare master plan

Bengaluru: With participants questioning the authority of Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) to draw up the plan and its failure to map out a better future for the city, the public consultation meeting held on Wednesday on the Revised Master Plan 2031 turned out to be a stormy affair.

The participants have expressed their anger over the absence of BDA officials at the meet for East Zone.

N S Mukunda, one of the founders of Citizen’s Action Forum, questioned the authority of BDA to continue with the master plan. Many participants were against the expansion of the city to accommodate over two crore people. Suggestions varied from capping the growth of the city to developing five satellite towns. But the general mood was against further rapid expansion of the city, terming it unsustainable.

Former BDA commissioner A Ravindra opined the new plan would have no meaning unless BDA does an on-ground survey and a gap analysis with the three previous master plans.

Kathyayini Chamaraj, Executive Trustee of CIVIC, said the plan had no provision for affordable housing, garbage management at the ward level, and land for schools, anganwadis and other such facilities for the poor.

The BDA has scheduled public consultation for South Zone at NMKRV College at 3 pm on Thursday.
