Bengaluru: Abhishek Majumdar, a city based playwright, reportedly received a threat call from a man belonging to a right wing group objecting a play staged by him in the city recently.
Hanuman Sena, reportedly a member of a right wing group, made an internet call and objected Majumdar’s play Dweepa which was to be staged at the recently concluded Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival. However, the play was staged as planned.
A Bangla play, Dweepa is about two people, who were blown away in a storm to an island, having to recreate their life on the abandoned piece of land in the middle of the Arabian Sea.
According to sources, the writer has received opposition and threats for staging his play earlier as well as it is based on Kashmir.
“I am neither worried about the threat nor am I going to lodge a complaint with the police. This is the second time I received a call from one of these groups,” he told The Hindu over telephone.
“Earlier too, right-wing groups have stopped the screening and staging of plays. They [right-wing groups] are generally opposed to content on Palestine and Kashmir from what I know,” he said. “I don’t think they will cause trouble in the cities where the plays are staged… they are cowards, they will attack individuals,” he said.
Majumdar said his family was a bit worried when they learnt of the call. “But I have convinced them that nothing is going to happen. I am returning to India next month and will wait and see if they really turn up,” he said.
