Bengaluru: Tipu Jayanti celebrations, which was started by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government earlier, is now being stopped by the Bharatiya Janata Party government, here on Tuesday, July 30.
Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has sent out a government circular to stop the celebrations.
Earlier, BJP MLA K G Bopaiah had submitted a plea to the government requesting a ban on the Tipu Jayanti celebrations. Responding to his plea, now the state government has taken the decision of putting a full stop to the celebrations.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan, who had requested the then Congress government in the state led by the then chief minister Siddaramaiah, has challenged CM BSY on stopping the celebrations.
He said, “Till date, the celebration were organized without any hiccups. Banning the celebrations is not acceptable. We’ll celebrate Tipu Jayanti with all grandeur, irrespective of consequences. Nobody can stop us from celebrating.”
Zameer also mocked CM BSY stating, “Ask disqualified MLA Roshan Baig opinion on Tipu Jayanti celebrations, who had recently joined your party. We are very eager to celebrate Tipu’s birthday, because of the BJP government’s decision.”
It can be recalled that Zameer who had resigned from Janata Dal (S) and joined the Congress during the time of Siddaramaiah’s government had pressurised the government to celebrate Tipu Jayanti. Siddaramaiah had then accepted Zameer’s request and decided to celebrate the day, even when the BJP leaders and pro-Hindu organizations condemned it outrightly, especially celebrating it in communally sensitive areas like Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru and Madikeri.
