Bengaluru: The kin of three people who died in Raichur after drinking contaminated water will receive an ex gratia payment of Rs. 5 lakh each, said Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
Speaking to mediaperson on Monday June 6 he said, “An investigation into the incident has been ordered. The incident has been taken seriously by the government, and the Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board (KWSSB) has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a technical report.”
A DySP rank office-led police investigation is underway to determine whether government officials were negligent in their duties, he added.
It can be recalled that three people died and more than 60 became ill, after drinking contaminated water given in Raichur city in May.
Locals were outraged by the tragedy and demanded that officials be held responsible for failing to provide safe drinking water.
The water supplied by Rampuru Reservoir was blamed by locals for making people sick.
According to sources, Dr. Bhaskar, the Superintendent of the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), said that 62 people were admitted to the hospital due to dehydration as a result of vomiting and diarrhoea.
