Delayed salaries forces Home Guard to attempt suicide

Bengaluru: Unable to handle financial problems, a Home Guard attached to Bengaluru Traffic Police who had attempted suicide on Thursday, tried ending her life again on Saturday, July 23.

Sumathi S, the Home Guard tried taking the extreme step as for salary for four months was pending. She had consumed two pills at her residence in Shivajinagar, when her 15-year-old son Gokul rescued her on time and gave first aid.

“God is great. He gave me a chance again. My son was here to save my life today and I feel grateful,” she said.

Sumathi said that pending salary from the past four months had left her dejected. “I am uncertain of how I will face tomorrow,” she said.

Sumathi is not the only one who is going through such a tough time. After the incident, few of her colleagues came forward to tell their own problems. A fellow Home Guard said that Sumathi was given attention as her situation was dire. But, there are 619 Home Guards who are going through the same problem.

“Sumathi had asked for financial assistance a few months ago, but was ignored. Officials want to help her now as she has attempted suicide.” Said a source in the city police.
