Bengaluru: An estimation carried out by the state government has revealed that the total loss due to the poor monsoon and post monsoon rain had caused drought which led to loss Rs.28,047 crores.
According to the sources, a total number of 156 taluks have been announced as drought-hit. Among them 100 were classified as drought hit during monsoon season due to the rain failure while 56 taluks were added following poor post monsoon rain. Now four more taluks have been added to the list taking the total number of drought hit taluks to 162.
According to the sources in the state government, as per the reports by the ground staff, the drought condition is very severe across the state. “This year the ground water level is shrinking. This is adding to the miseries of the people,’ explained a senior officer.
“Supply of drinking water and providing fodder to the cattle are the major challenges. Except four dams of the South Karnataka, all other dams are facing insufficient water to cater to the demands of both irrigation and the drinking water purposes,” added sources.
