Bengaluru: Drought may have hit farmer community in several ways. But it has come as a blessing in disguise for the coconut growers from South Karnataka region especially Mandya, Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru etc. Reason-price of tender coconut has reached an all time high of Rs.40 in Bengaluru city with coconut growers in a bargaining position.
According to the tender coconut sellers, since Monday, price of a single tender coconut has reached Rs.40 in Bengaluru. “We get tender coconuts from Maddur of Mandya taluk. Till last week, we were selling Tender coconut for Rs.30. But suddenly now the price has increased due to the tough bargaining by the growers. Coconut growers who are now aware of the heat wave and record temperature in Bengaluru city are charging Rs. 30 at their plantation itself. So we are selling it for Rs.40. Rs 30 per tender coconut was the record price till last year,” said Abhigowda, a tender coconut seller from Malleshwaram.
According to him, prices of coconut have also nearly doubled in the last one week. “Coconut growers of South Karnataka actually are not the victims of the drought. But they are reaping benefits out of it. Due to the impeded supply of tender coconuts and coconuts, rates are skyrocketing in Bengaluru,” says Veera Swamy, a Tiptur based coconut seller in Subramanyanagar of Bengaluru.
