Bengaluru: The Election Commission has taken note of advertisements publicizing the achievements of the Congress government in Karnataka in newspapers in poll-bound Telangana, seeking an explanation from the state government. In a letter addressed to the Karnataka chief secretary, the commission raised concerns about the lack of prior approval for these advertisements, a violation of the poll code.

The Election Commission has instructed the Karnataka government to immediately halt the publication of such advertisements in Telangana until the necessary approvals are obtained. The commission has requested an explanation from the Karnataka government by 5 pm on Tuesday regarding the circumstances that led to the violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) instructions.

Furthermore, the commission inquired about why disciplinary action should not be taken against the secretary-in-charge of the Department of Information and Public Relations for the procedural violations outlined in the MCC instructions.

Earlier in the day, the BJP had lodged a complaint with the Election Commission, alleging that the Congress government in Karnataka violated the Representation of the People Act and the Model Code of Conduct by placing advertisements in Telangana media, potentially influencing the upcoming assembly polls scheduled for November 30. The Election Commission’s swift response highlights the gravity of the situation as it strives to ensure fair and impartial elections in Telangana.
