In a dramatic turn of events on Sunday, a 26-year-old man attempted self-immolation near Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru, reportedly to draw media attention. The man, identified as Zuhail Ahmed from Hebbal, arrived at the spot around 4:30 pm, just as journalists had gathered for a politician’s press meet.
Witnesses say Ahmed poured petrol on himself and pulled out a plastic bottle, but alert reporters quickly intervened and snatched it away. Without a lighter or matchbox, he couldn’t ignite the fuel. Bystanders then doused him with water and handed him over to the police.
Ahmed was booked by the Vidhana Soudha police under charges of public nuisance. According to his statement to the press, he alleged that he had been assaulted by his wife and was hospitalised due to the injuries. He said his act was a desperate attempt to bring his situation to light through media coverage.
Police sources revealed that Ahmed is employed as an engineer at a private firm in Hebbal. His wife, who lives separately in Chikkaballapur, had earlier filed a complaint under IPC Section 498A, accusing him of cruelty. The Chikkaballapur police had booked him based on her allegations.
While the incident caused a brief scare, no injuries were reported. Authorities are now reviewing the case and considering Ahmed’s mental and emotional state.
