Bengaluru: The Congress on Thursday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP leadership for observing a “farcical fast” and termed it as “PM’s fast of atonement” for failing India.
“The BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, are enacting a absurd drama of photo-ops and headline management as they are aware of the unprecedented public ire, and imminent defeat in Karnataka in May 2018 and Lok Sabha in 2019’’ said All India Congress Committee (AICC) communications in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala.
Speaking with media persons here at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office, Surjewala said the BJP leaders’ lame duck excuse for the fake fast was non-functioning of Parliament.
“Stark reality is that, Modi government has denigrated the highest temple of democracy i.e., India’s Parliament, by obstructing its functioning, first in Opposition and more preposterously, when in power,’’ Surjewala said.
BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi began their day-long fast on Thursday, in protest against the washout of the Parliament proceedings during both legs of the budget session.
Coming down heavily on the BJP for disrupting the parliament through its proxy allies and engineering deafening din and noise, he said that the BJP did not permit four no-confidence motions to be deliberated or voted.
“For a party which disrupted 66.88 per cent of the total functioning time of the previous Lok Sabha (2009-14) and wasted 250 functioning hours of the Budget session by engineering disruptions. Modi government and BJP should tender an unconditional apology for dishonouring democracy,’’ he said.
He has also blamed Modi government for not fixing the responsibility for the Rs 63,690 crore bank loot scams and for not answering as to how Nirav Modi, Choksi, Jatin Meta have escaped from the country.
“The BJP did not give the reason for extra payment of Rs 58,000 crore for Rafale bypassing the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It did not come clean on the SSC scam jeopardizing the future of two crore youth. It did not respond to CBSE paper leak scam, putting at stake the hard work of 24 lakh students,’’ he said.
He said the BJP did not let the demand for the sacking of Goa BJP minister Vinod Palyekar who abused Kannada people.
“The BJP, with over 300 MPs in the Lok Sabha, did not let it function for over 1 per cent of its time, as also did not let Rajya Sabha function for more than 6 per cent of its time,’’ he said.
Stating that Modi government has no sense of accountability, he said the government has lost its direction and purpose. “The truth is, the Prime Minister has lost credibility. Modi’s word carried no value. Modi and Shah came to power by making fake promises,’’ he said.
He also said that BJP should realise that time for fast has been over and the time for losing from the seat of power has begun now.
