It’s high time we say goodbye to girls only educational institutions as Karnataka sees yet another one of its prestigious colleges taking part in the Co-ed rush, by opening its gates to boys.

The situation, as in the case of most of these institutes till now, sees mixed reactions, with some boys embracing the change as the find ways to survive in a campus where they are now the minority. However, there is yet another section of boys who steer far from the new option before them.

An interesting case here is that of Fabil Abfallakutti, who found himself to be in such a situation by sheer accident. The candidate, on his admission, had no idea that he was stepping into a college that till now saw only women.

However, he sure has something to be proud of, as the so-called accident makes him the first male to study in one of Bangalore’s most prestigious colleges, that has for the past 75 years, operated as a woman’s only college.

One can only imagine his reaction on later knowing what he was in for. Good for him, the institution later received two other boys, to save him from being the only male student of the post graduate college.

Today Fabil, now working in Kerala, from where he comes, laughs as he looks back at the situation, recalling his first experience of walking in to have a sea of girls stare at him like he was an alien.

His initial days were sure as the boy would often feel left out in a class that contained only girls. Finding someone to partner with for assignments sure was a struggle. But Fabil seemed to have sailed through pretty well. And for this, we have the students of Mount Carmel to thank for making the first new boy of the class feel at home.

In the end, we have to agree that this changing scene taking place in a lot of campuses today is a clear sign of social progress. And to all boys who contemplate entering Mount Carmel college, Fabil gives his word, saying that the situation is well equipped and ready to accommodate more of them in every way.

That was back in the years 2012 -23, with Fabil pursuing his post graduation in college. He sure has given the college more hope as today, it plans to open the doors of its undergraduate college too, to let boys be a part of the college.
