Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is in a fix as the JDS-Congress coalition government didn’t release proper funds for Indira Canteen. With this, the BBMP has come to pay the amount from its own revenue.
Speaking to media persons here on Monday, Opposition Party Leader Padmanabha Reddy said that in 2017-18, a sum of Rs 100 cr was released to the BBMP for the construction and maintenance of Indira Canteens. But, the cost of construction of the canteen ran up to Rs.87.73 crores and for maintenance-Rs. 33.78 crores, which means a total of Rs 121.51 cr was spent. The additional Rs 21.51 cr was hence spent by the BBMP for the ambitious project.
The government has earmarked Rs.120 crores in the budget for Indira Canteen project for the year 2018-19. But, the Corporation didn’t get the fund till date. This has compelled the BBMP to pay the contractor from its own pocket. Accordingly, a sum of Rs 14.74cr has been paid to the contractor towards maintenance, which is becoming a financial burden to the BBMP.
