Bengaluru: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced on Monday May 16 that the scheme of distributing free bicycles to high school students, which had been stopped for a few years, will be resumed for the current academic year.
Bommai, who launched the academic year 2022-23 at Empress Karnataka Public School (KPS), was responding to a Class X student at KPS in Bellavi town, who insisted on using bicycles to get to school on time because her house is far from the school.
“It was stopped when schools were closed due to the pandemic. We will now distribute bicycles using funds from the supplementary budget, “he said.
“Schools have resumed after a long time. Offline classes are important for students, and I welcome them back. In the following days, we will provide books, uniforms, and bicycles,” he added.
Bommai admitted that the situation is similar in many schools across the state, as new classrooms had not been built in 8 to 10 years. “By the end of the year, we will build over 6,500 classrooms at a cost of Rs. 1,000 Crore,” he claimed.
