Heavy rains lashed Bengaluru over the weekend, triggering major disruptions at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) and affecting flight schedules across the country.
According to airport sources, at least 15 incoming flights were diverted while 36 flights experienced delays on Saturday due to adverse weather conditions. The disruptions created a ripple effect, leading to delays for several subsequent flights and causing inconvenience to hundreds of passengers.
Rainfall impacts airport operations
The sudden spell of heavy rain reduced visibility and affected aircraft movement, forcing airport authorities and airlines to alter flight operations as a precautionary measure.
Passengers reported long waiting times as airlines worked to manage the situation and adjust schedules. Several travellers took to social media to share updates about delayed departures and arrivals.
Diversions create cascading delays
Airport officials indicated that diverted flights and delayed arrivals had a cascading impact on the day’s operations. Aircraft arriving late from other destinations further contributed to delays across multiple routes.
Despite the disruptions, airport authorities continued operations while prioritising passenger safety and adherence to aviation guidelines.
Monsoon challenges return
Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed that Kempegowda International Airport recorded significant rainfall during the weather event. The incident highlights the challenges airports face during intense monsoon showers, particularly when visibility and runway conditions are affected.
Weather experts have forecast continued rain activity across Bengaluru and parts of Karnataka in the coming days, prompting authorities to remain vigilant.
Travellers have been advised to check flight schedules with their airlines before heading to the airport and to allow additional time for their journeys during periods of adverse weather.
