US-based DNA sequencing leader Illumina Inc. has launched a global capability centre in Bengaluru, further solidifying its presence in India. Situated in Manyata Technology Park, the facility aims to grow Illumina’s global workforce, attract top regional talent, and support its worldwide customer base. The centre, initially housing over 80 employees, is expected to expand to 200 by the end of 2025.
This development highlights Illumina’s strategic investment in India’s burgeoning genomics and innovation ecosystem. The company also operates a customer solutions centre in Bengaluru and opened a cutting-edge genomics lab in the city in 2023. The lab, part of the Illumina Solutions Centre, features advanced next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies and provides training and education.
India’s growing adoption of genomics, driven by the country’s 1.5 billion population, holds immense potential for public health and personalized medicine. With an estimated 96 million Indians affected by rare diseases and one in nine likely to develop cancer, genomics-based solutions could significantly impact healthcare outcomes.
Illumina’s global operations include sequencing centres in Cambridge, UK, and innovation centres in Singapore, alongside commercial offices worldwide. By building skilled global teams, Illumina aims to scale innovation and strengthen its role in advancing genomics across diverse regions.
