Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Cable Television Operators Association have announced that they will be on strike on January 24 between 6 AM and 10 PM. They are protesting the new tariff policy of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) that will be in effect from February 1. This means that TV screens running on local cable connections will remain blank during the stipulated time on January 24.

Of the new tariffs, president of the association, V S Patrick Raju said that they would not benefit either the users or the service providers. He told The Hindu that, under the new rules, the customers will have to pay Rs 1,500 for 450 channels instead of the Rs 300 that they are currently paying. He then accused the TRAI of favouring the major players in the market.

Presently, the state has about 60 lakh users of local cable service providers.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are also seeing protests over the issue.
