Bengaluru :The Karnataka Raj Bhavan has issued a statement clarifying the stance of Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot regarding the ordinance mandating 60 percent signage in Kannada. Contrary to earlier reports suggesting outright rejection, the statement emphasizes that Governor Gehlot has returned the ordinance to the state government with advice for further deliberation.
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar had previously indicated that the Governor had rejected the ordinance, stating, “We made a law and approved an ordinance. The Governor could have given his assent. Instead, he has sent it back saying it should be passed in the Assembly.”
The decision to pursue the ordinance route came after violent protests by pro-Kannada outfits targeting businesses in Bengaluru for allegedly neglecting the state language.
Karnataka’s Budget session is scheduled to commence next month, during which Governor Gehlot is set to address both houses of the legislature on February 12th.
