Bengaluru: Adding another feather to the tech-savvy Karnataka police department’s cap, it has now become the first in the country to have an exclusive Drone Squad.
It will be used to monitor illegal activities like sand mining and other mafia activities along with security purposes like VVIP movements and others.
In the first installment, 12 drones have already been inducted and 20 personnel have been trained to operate them.
Most of the drones are deployed in the border districts of Andra Pradesh where illegal sand mining is on full swing.
It would be inducted in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru and other districts.
The cost of each drone is Rs 1.2 lakh and they are imported from South Korea.
The drones are equipped with high quality resolution cameras and night visibility recording systems.
The induction of drones is expected to curb the illegal mining and other activities, said additional commissioner of crime, Bhaskar Rao.
