Bengaluru: Karnataka is mulling over legal options to have its own, separate flag on the lines of Jammu & Kashmir. Currently, Jammu and Kashmir, which has special status under Article 370 of the Constitution, is the only state in the nation that has its own flag.
It is learnt that a nine-member panel, including bureaucrats and academicians has been formed to look into the legal framework on these lines.
Notably, the move is not being supported by the BJP, which had earlier too turned down the demand when it was ruling the state, citing that the same went against the unity and integrity of the nation.
Interestingly, the Congress has now raised this demand just ahead of assembly elections in the state next year and amid protests by pro-Kannada activists against what they have called the imposition of Hindi in the state by the BJP-ruled centre.
Karnataka has a red and yellow flag that is used for cultural events, but the BJP government had rejected a move to declare that an official flag.
