Bengaluru: With drought situation in the state going from bad to worse, the State government has decided to send a team of higher officials to Maharashtra to urge release of water to Krishna and Bhima rivers from its Maharashtra’s Koyna and Ujjani reservoirs.

It may be noted that several villages Karnataka-Maharashtra borders, in the Krishna basin are facing acute shortage of water.

While Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah had written to his Maharashtra counterpart Devendra Fadnavis in this regard, the letter evoke no response from Fadnavis.

The team of officials will hence try and impress on Fadnavis the severity of the situation, said Minister for Water Resources M B Patil.

He said the water level in various reservoirs, including Almatti, Narayanapur, Krishnaraja Sagar, Tunga and Bhadra, were depleting rapidly with the onset of summer.

Meanwhile, speaking at a progress review meeting of the Karnataka Development Programme in Belagavi on Wednesday, Small Scale Industries and district in-charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi said that he would fix the dates for the visit after discussing the plan with Water Resources Minister Patil.
