Karnataka University has the highest number of vacant teaching and non-teaching positions among all public universities in Karnataka, with 1,263 posts unfilled, according to data from the state’s higher education department. Bangalore University (1,006 vacancies) and the University of Mysore (747 vacancies) follow closely, highlighting a widespread staffing crisis in higher education.
The data was presented in the Legislative Council in response to an unstarred question by member Umashree. The government had previously admitted that around 77% of university posts remain vacant due to a long-standing recruitment freeze, severely impacting education quality.
Several universities have submitted recruitment proposals to the finance department, with approvals being granted for some. The hiring process will be conducted through the Karnataka Examinations Authority. Meanwhile, universities like Karnatak and Bangalore University are relying on guest lecturers and contract staff to manage the academic workload.
Experts warn that the shortage of permanent faculty affects research, innovation, and university rankings. Former Vice-Chancellors’ Forum secretary Maheshappa H emphasized the urgent need for recruitment, stating that guest lecturers cannot sustain long-term academic excellence. He urged the government to prioritize education funding despite financial constraints, as many universities have gone over a decade without fresh hiring.
