The Congress high command’s decision to appoint V D Satheesan as Kerala Chief Minister has sparked fresh political speculation in Karnataka, where supporters of Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar believe the leadership question in the state can no longer be delayed indefinitely.
The renewed discussion coincided with Shivakumar’s 64th birthday celebrations, during which supporters installed posters, banners and digital billboards across Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka urging the Congress leadership to elevate him to the chief minister’s post.
Although Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has publicly clarified that Siddaramaiah will continue as Chief Minister, developments in Kerala have energised Shivakumar’s supporters ahead of the Karnataka government completing three years in office on May 20.
Political commentator Hidayathulla Kuvenda reportedly described Shivakumar as a “battle-tested organiser” who protected the party during political crises and argued that elevating him could strengthen Congress’ long-term position in Karnataka.
Supporters of Shivakumar are said to believe that a leadership transition now would provide him nearly two years to showcase governance achievements before the next Assembly elections.
However, leaders close to Siddaramaiah maintain that the Congress high command is unlikely to reopen the leadership issue immediately, especially with the party already in power in Karnataka.
Political analysts say comparisons between Kerala and Karnataka may not fully apply. Analyst Vishwas Shetty observed that unlike Kerala, where Congress needed a fresh face before elections, Karnataka already has a functioning government and any abrupt leadership change could impact administration, caste equations and internal party balance.
Another political commentator, M N Patil, noted that both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar remain crucial to the Congress in Karnataka, with one leading mass politics and the other managing organisational strength and resource mobilisation.
Observers believe the final decision on any future leadership transition will rest with the Congress high command, particularly Rahul Gandhi.er.
