Bengaluru: The state government will soon set up subsidized canteens in all the government Pre-University colleges having student strength of above 500.

In an interactive session organised by the UNICEF and the state Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (KCPCR), state primary and secondary education minister Tanveer Sait responded to a query of a student who brought to his notice a heart wrenching fact that many students remain hungry on college premises because they cannot afford a proper meal.

Stating that Indira canteens can’t be set up on college campuses, Sait said that the matter will be taken up seriously.

A student named Nandini from Hosakote told Sait during the interaction session that students remaining hungry in classrooms because of their economic status is a common scene even today.

Apart from an assurance to start canteens for students, Sait said that from next academic year the KSRTC passes will be distributed online for all the students.

Meanwhile, Sait faced some embarrassment for his statement that students from English medium lack social concern.

A good number of students from English medium background stood up and aired their disagreement, following which the Minister took back his words.
