Bengaluru: Amid reports of the farm crisis in the country, and allegations that Central Government and State Government are anti-farmers, it is heartening to note that in last three years, the State has witnessed a huge drop in the number of farmers’ suicides.

According to the data shared by the Union  Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar in the ongoing Lok Sabha session, in the year 2018, 1365 farmers had committed suicide in the State, the number which dropped down 1331 the very next year. In the year 2020, the number has decreased even further down to 1,072.

Speaking to Newskarnataka.com, an officer from the Agriculture Department informed that the number for 2021 will be below 1,000 as the suicide rate lessened sharply.

This data come as a big weapon for the ruling BJP when the opposition parties are alleging that Central Government is anti-farmer.

As per the data, in the year 2018,  5763 farmers had committed suicide in the country. This number jumped to  5957 in the year 2019. However in the year 2020 it has fallen down to 5579.
